Sunday School (2-20-12)
Instead of waiting for those coming in
late, I like to start on time, sometimes with a subject other than from the Bare
Bones Bible Bios we have
been going through. This week we went over the subject of my latest
"One minute" video regarding the error of using 2Pe 3:8 to say that the days
of creation were longer than 24 hours. I have a link to that video
on the home page of this website. We then continued studying
Jeremiah, and how
he remained a loyal spokesman for God because he had hidden God's word in
his heart and mind. We also talked about the new covenant mentioned
in Jer 31:31,33,34.
Worship Service
Pastor concluded the message he started last
week on the Parable of the Sower, going through Mt 13:16-23.
Evening Service
Pastor continued his study of "The Gospel in
the Ancient Star Name Meanings." After a quick review we looked at the
constellation commonly
known as Virgo, it's spiritual meaning, the ancient meanings of three of
it's stars, as well as the spiritual significance in the same way of it's three
accompanying constellations. Together they show the virgin
birth of the promised seed, who would be the glorious and beautiful One called
the
Branch, who would also be the desired Son, the despised sin offering, as
well the coming guardian shepherd that was pierced. That is
just the
first of 12 such lessons that show the glory of God and the gospel in the
ancient names He gave to about 200 stars, that each have verses in the Bible
that correspond to them.
Mid-week service (2-15-12)
First we went over 2Pe 3:8 and why it is not a good
verse to say that the creation days of Gen 1 are thousands of years. 2Pe
3:8 is along the
lines of Ps 90:4 and bring out that God is a God of eternity and a
thousand years to Him doesn't seem as long as it does to us.
We then continued our study on prayer, this week's
lesson being on "The Hindrances to Prayer." First of all, God can't
answer prayer unless
someone prays. Generally speaking, the hindrances to prayer
involve our own sin, one way or another.
Sunday School (2-12-12)
After opening in prayer, we discussed whether it
would be proper for women to open in prayer for either a mixed adult Sunday
School class,
or for a church business meeting. We all agreed that it would
not be contrary to 1Ti 2:11,12 or 1Co 14:34,35 to have a woman open in prayer
for the SS. Regarding a business meeting, scripturally it is
seemingly O.K., but might not fit in the "better, or best" categories of the
"Good,
better, best" principal. We also stated that if men are not found
in the church that are qualified to be a/the pastor, elder, or deacon/trustee,
scripturally speaking these positions should not be filled until such men
are qualified, or new men that are qualified and given time to be proven,
come into the church. Women should not fill these positions
for any reason, including that there are no men, or none qualified or willing.
Worship Service
Mt 13:1-15 was the text of a two part
message entitled "The Parable of the Sower." The different conditions of
people's receptivity to the gospel
is portrayed in this parable as different kinds of soils (three bad,
& one good) that a farmer sowing seed may encounter. The
good soil receives the
and is not hindered from growing, producing good fruit, &
good seed to reproduce itself. True Christians are those that
will grow, if allowed to,
share the gospel, & be used in either sowing or reaping or both to see
others also receive Christ and be saved, grow, & reproduce spiritually.
Evening Service
Pastor began a fascinating study on "The Gospel in
the Ancient Star Name Meanings." Using a PowerPoint presentation of
82 slides that he put
together himself, Pastor is showing from many scriptures in the Bible how
God used the names He gave to stars in 48 constellations to tell the basic
story of Christ redeeming people to safety from sin & the power of Satan.
Pastor also had on display eight charts that he made almost 40 years ago,
as well as about six books that speak on this subject.
Mid-week service (2-8-12)
Continuing our study on prayer we looked at
"Where (and when) to Pray." We came across passages that tell us to
pray when assembled
together with other Christians, whether at church or in homes, to pray
when under stress or when others are under stress. We are also not to
let the presence of unbelievers keep us from praying out loud when
appropriate, say at restaurants. (I mean if they can talk through
our meals
on their cell phones we should be able to say "grace" out loud.) We
then had a very special time of our own prayer. Sorry you missed it.
Sunday School (2-5-12)
We started off going over the erroneous teachings
of the 5 point Calvinists, who have a wrong notion of what the Total Depravity
of Man is,
who also teach Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible
Grace, and a wrong concept of the Perseverance of the Saints. There
is the acrostic "TULIP" to help us remember the names of these doctrines.
We then continued our lesson in Jeremiah, talking about
how Jeremiah stood for God, preached against sin, & for it became very unpopular
with
the people. We also noted that it is after we respond correctly
during, and come through hardships, that we find we have grown in character.
Worship Service
"Spiritual Family" was the title of the
message, with the text being Mt 12:46-50. We saw that Jesus had a
higher regard for those that would
become His spiritual family than for those that were His physical family
by blood. We were to understand that one needs to become a part of the
spiritual family through being spiritually born into that family by
receiving Christ as Savior and Lord.
Evening Service
After beginning his series of messages on Sept 10, 2006
through the entire Gospel of Luke, Pastor brought it to a complete, finishing
his final
message in this series titled "The Ascension." The text had
begun with Lk 24:46, and we went through 49-53 this evening. We had a
special
visitor that had come all the way from Apple Valley, named David Smith,
who had attended for a number of years up until 1978. A few of us
were able to reminisce with him about people we either knew, had met, or
had heard of.
Mid-week service (2-1-12)
Continuing our lesson on prayer we covered the "How to Pray"
section, of course followed by prayer, part of which was praying through part
of the CBC church directory, which Pastor has been encouraging people in
the church to do.
Sunday School (1-29-12)
Reading Ex 34:28 we cleared up that Moses not only went
with out food, he went without water for 40 days & nights. This led
into a discussion
and declaration that there was plenty of room to put all the stated
animals on the ark with Noah. We then went over the idea of each of us
praying
through the week for each person in the church directory.
Next we continued our lesson in Jeremiah, talking about how abortion is wrong
because
it is God that forms the body and spirit in the womb, Jer 1:5
Worship Service
Worship Service
"The Fight is On" was the title of the
message, with the text being Eph 6:10-20. Pastor used several other verses
in the Bible to bring out aspects
of our spiritual warfare. After the sermon, four of our
children came in wearing paper "armor" from head to toe labeled
with the different names
of the pieces of armor found in Pastor's text.
Evening Service
Pastor has started to take the 5th Sunday of months with 5
Sundays off now. He has been pastor of CBC and this has always been in his
contract
to do, but till now he hasn't wanted to take it.
Mid-week service (1-25-12)
We covered nine reasons why we should pray, giving
verses for each. What particularly stood out for us is that Jas 5:16 tells
Christians
to pray for one another, and the thought that if we don't we are
disobeying God, we are sinning. We realized that we should be praying for
others in our congregation. Can you imagine how things might
be if many of us prayed for each person by name that attends CBC. To ask
yourself the question "How many minutes do I spend praying for
people by name at CBC?" could be a real eye-opener to your prayer life.
Sunday School (1-22-12)
Seeing we had three men from China visiting with us, I
took time to explain how the Bible came into being (2Pe 1:20,21) and when it
was divided into chapters and verses and by who. In 1228 A.D.
Stephen Langton divided it into 1,189 chapters. In 1448 (200 Yrs later)
Mordecai E. Nathan divided the Old Testament into 23,216 verses. In
1551 Robert (Estienne) Stephens divided the New Testament into
7,947 verses. We then continued our lesson on Jeremiah.
We attempted to video this sermon, but only 12.24
minutes were videoed before the camera automatically shut down. We did
record the
audio portion, and that should be available on the Centinela Pages
website soon. The message is entitled "Taking Care of Business,"
with the
text being 1Th 2:19,20. The emphasis was that
those that lead others to Jesus will earn a "crown of rejoicing" from the Lord.
During his
message, seeing no one received his invitation, he led an imaginary
person to the Lord, so that people could see how it is done.
Evening Service
Before the 7 P.M. business meeting, Pastor continued his
previous message on the Ascension of Christ, only getting through Lk 24:49, as
he
used several other verses to speak on various things that the text
brought to his mind.
Mid-week service (1-18-12)
Our lesson this week corresponded with (though we
didn't use yet) the last three "Power for Living" magazines on "Prayer."
We looked (or will be looking) at the "What," "Why," "How,"
"Where," and "Hindrances to," prayer.
Sunday School 1-15-12
We began our study of Jeremiah with a quote from Lev 19:28
which had a general teaching against the common practice of tattooing the
body. The "Bible & Spade" magazine said that some have
said that the church does not address social issues, and so has become
irrelevant. Verses from the "Shorter (minor) Prophets" were
given to go along with this introduction to Jeremiah, a man known for his
endurance in his service for God.
Worship Service
"Jesus is Greater"
was
the sermon title applied to Mt 12:38-45 which speak of how an unclean
spirit left a man only to return to the man
who was still empty (without Christ) thought he had morally cleaned up
his life and got it "back in order." Jesus is greater than Jonah,
Solomon, or anyone that has ever lived, greater than our
problems, our ambitions, and anything about us, & deserves our everlasting
loyalty.
This sermon is sparking talk about audibly recording the sermons and
putting them on the Internet, as well as trying to record particularly
powerful sermons on video and putting them on the
Net as well.
Evening Service
Pastor
began probably a three-part sermon on the Ascension of Christ, as we
draw to the end of our study on the Book of Luke.
Mid-week service (1-11-12)
We had a smaller than usual group this week, but possibly an even
better time of closeness with each other and the Lord. One person
gave
a testimony of witnessing, yet realizing their own errors in how they
were doing it, and that they need to have a balance between being too
weak in their witness, and being too bold. We also looked at an
article from "Bible and Spade" that speaks of the basic Biblical ignorance
that most Christians have.
Worship Service
"Judged by Your Words" was pastor's sermon title, with the text being
Mt 12:31-37. Pastor taught on "The Unpardonable Sin" as being
committed
only by those Pharisees that attributed the power of the Holy Spirit
working in Jesus while on earth to Beelzebub. He also said that anyone
that
rejects the Spirit's work of revealing that one must come through Jesus
to be saved till their death could not be saved. He then went on to
share
how God keeps track of all that we say and even think, and sin that is
not forgiven by Christ's cleansing blood would be later judged.
Evening Service
Nearing the end of our time in Luke, we looked at
Lk 24:40-45 in a passage Pastor titled "Forewarned is Forearmed."'
With it, he emphasized
our necessity to personally be studiers of God's Word, knowing it well,
to understand and cope with the many things that come up in our daily lives.
Mid-week service (1-4-12)
Went over the subjects of Systematic Theology one more
time, and then in to more of the topic of "The Church." We saw that we and
the
church in general are to be "militant" Christians, vigorous and
aggressive in pursuit or support of the cause of Christ. We are in a
spiritual
warfare and need to take up the spiritual weapons of the sword of the
spirit and have our feet shod with the gospel of peace, putting on the
whole armor of God.
Worship Service
"Let Make a Deal" was pastor's sermon title, with the text being Ge
2:7,15-17. We received a lesson on the eight major covenants that God
has made with various individual, the nation of Israel, as well as the
entire human race. We were challenged with various deals God
might want
to enter in with us this New Year.
Mid-week service (12-28-11)
Looking at the 10 major subjects (plus Bibliology) of
our lesson on Systematic Theology, we saw that any subject we could think of
could
be placed under one or more of these major subjects. Theology,
Christology, Pneumatology, etc.
Worship Service
This
Christmas Day we had a special children's play, communion, and a special
way of giving our offering (bringing it gift wrapped, and laying
it in a decorated box before a representation of Jesus in the manger.
Looking at Mt 2:1-12 pastor preached on "The Journey of Giving and
Receiving" speaking of Christ's first coming through his second coming
and that through our own journey of life we can each celebrate Christ
birth, death, resurrection, ascension, 2nd coming, and eternal reign.
Mid-week service (12-21-11)
No service due to people getting ready for Christmas and
Pastor practicing with the children who will be doing a presentation on the
upcoming Sunday, Christmas Day.
Worship Service
From Mt 12:24-30 Pastor preached "The Divided Kingdom." He spoke
on how we are to be united with God through obedience to God,
and how that Christians are to be united with each other through
spiritual fellowship.
Mid-week service (12-14-11)
After one of the members started us in a quick
review of the names of the Books of the Bible they had studied this week, we
went through
the remainder of the books, and then through the names of eight major
studies of Systematic Theology: Theology, Christology, Pneumatology,
Anthropology, Hamartiology, Soteriology, Ecclesiology, Eschatology,
Demonology, and Angelology. We then continued our lesson on
Ecclesiology, answering the question "What is the purpose of the Church?"
using 1Co 12:28; Eph 4:11-13, and Mt 28:18-20.
Worship Service
From
Mt 12:22,23 Pastor preached on "When the Blind See."
Nearing Christmas, he preached about a demon-possessed man that could
neither see nor speak, stating that demons don't take holidays and
vacations, and that we must always be on guard against them. We
were
challenged to make sure our own spiritual eyes have been opened by the
Lord, and that we are not running around spiritually ignorant of
the aspects of life He would like us to see.
Mid-week service (12-7-11)
Not only did two of those in attendance come up
to the white board and go through the names of all of the books of the Bible and
the
categories they are grouped in to, we also went through all of Psalm 145.
Worship Service
From
Mt 12:9-21 Pastor preached on "The Work of the Messiah." With the
story of the healing on the Sabbath of the man with the
withered hand, Pastor brought out how that both Christ and Christians are
called sons of God, servants of God, and the chosen of God.
Mid-week service (11-30-11)
This week we discussed the importance of the written word of
God, that we are to be reading it daily and taking it in as spiritual food.
Sunday School
We looked at the 2nd and 3rd chapters of the book of
Esther and discussed anti-Semitism. We saw how King Saul was a Benjamite who
was called by God to destroy the Amalekites, but had spared their king, Agag.
Samuel then killed Agag. In Esther, Mordecai is a Benjamite
who is hated by Haman, an Agagite.
Worship Service
From
Mt 12:1-8 we saw how Jesus is not just "Lord of the Sabbath," but Lord
of all, and that the laws concerning mercy to men that would
trust in God superseded laws regarding the ceremonial keeping of the
Sabbath. See Hos 6:6.
Mid-week service (11-23-11)
No service this week due to preparations for Thanksgiving the
next day.
Worship Service
"Thanks that Glorifies God" was Pastor's sermon title.
From beginning to end this service, before Thanksgiving Thursday, was about
giving thanks to God. We have a wonderful God, who has given us so
much to be thankful for. The congregation was given, and some
took the opportunity to stand and share what they were thankful for.
Mid-week service (11-16-11)
Seeing we only had 3 people for our Mid-Week service, instead of
moving ahead on our study of "The Church" we had an enjoyable time
letting the one that was at the white board last week going over the 66
books of the Bible do it again. It was a good review for all of us.
We spend time on the book of Esther in particular, which was good seeing
we are beginning that book in Sunday School.
Worship Service
"The Wise and the Babes" from Mt
11:25-30 was the title and sermon text. We learned that it is not the
wise and prudent of this world that
receive the things of God, but the babes, those of any age that are
spiritually humble and trusting in the Lord.
Mid-week service (11-9-11)
This week we let one of the people (besides Pastor) teach us
what they knew from the items that were still left on the white boards from
last week. Then another person did the same thing, as Pastor helped
fill in the gaps. What we were going over were the names of all the
books of the Bible, and what groups they are broken into.
Mid-week service (11-2-11)
Part 3 of 7 parts on "The Church" "It's organization"
was covered tonight using 1Timothy, Titus, Ephesians, and 1 Corinthians.
Mid-week
service (10-26-11)
We continued our lesson on "The Church" and focus on
the first two of seven points, "The Foundation" and "Christ the head of the
Church."
Mid-week
service (10-19-11)
This week we began an introduction to the 7 point lesson on "The Church."
Mid-week
service (10-12-11)
We reviewed the five crown rewards that the Bible speaks of,
that God will give to those that serve Him properly.
Sunday School
We read through Nehemiah 4 and saw lessons
concerning opposition, prayer, commitment to work, the need to work together,
and that family ties motivate people to work.
Worship Service
"Pathway to Glory" Pt 3, Mt 10:34-42
This is a two way street. One can choose to serve God
wholeheartedly, or seek to
follow their own desires in seeking what the world offers.
One results in great glory, the other in lost opportunity & lost reward.
Evening Service
Christ's Crucifixion (Pt 2) Lk 23:34-43 The penitent thief
on the cross is saved through recognizing he is a sinner (Ro 3:23),
knowing that he deserves death (Ro 6:23), knowing that Jesus is
Lord (Ro 10:9), and asking Him to remember (save) him (Ro 10:13).
Mid-week
service (10-4-11)
We finished our lesson on the five general judgments in the
Bible, going over the first three again briefly, and the last two in detail.
The last two have to do with the judgment of the living unsaved at
the end of the Millennial Kingdom, and the Great White Throne
Judgment of the rest of the unsaved of all time.
10-2-11
Sunday School
We saw that just as Nehemiah was not committed
until sharing his burden with first the king of Persia, and then invited the
Jews of
of Jerusalem to join in the work of rebuilding the walls with him,
we are to be committed to sharing the work of the church with the
other Christians in the church.
Worship Service
"Pathway to Glory" Pt 2, Mt 10:24-33
After speaking out for God, the pathway to glory, we can expect some rejection &
suffering,
just as Jesus did, but Christ values us so much and will confess us
highly before God the Father.
Evening Service
Christ's Crucifixion (Pt 1)
Lk 23:26-33 Simon the Cyrenean, the weeping women, Christ's comfort
to the women, and warning
of more judgment to come upon the nation in the future.
Mid-week
service (9-28-11)
We covered the first three of the five major judgments
in the Bible:
1. The judgment of believers upon the cross of Christ.
2. The daily judgment of believer's lives, either by themselves, or
by God if they refrain from judging themselves.
3. The judgment of believer's works at the judgment (Bema) seat of
Christ.
9-25-11
Sunday School
We continued our study on Nehemiah.
We saw that just as Nehemiah gained a passion for the work of rebuilding the
walls of Jerusalem
by being exposed to the ruined condition that they were in, we can
get a passion for the things of God by being exposed to them from our study
of His word.
Worship Service
"Pathway to Glory" Pt 1, Mt 10:16-23
This pathway is first to speak for God. Secondly it involves
suffering.
Finally it will include physical and eternal salvation, while vvs
41,42 show that it will end in receiving reward.
Evening Service
The title of the message was "Barabbas or Jesus?" and was found in Lk
23:13-25. We saw a similarity between us and Barabbas,
as we have the title Christian, and Barabbas may also have had the
name Jesus Barabbas, as some manuscripts show in Mt 17:16.
Just as Jesus took Barabbas' place on the cross, and Barabbas' was
set free, so Jesus took our place of punishment, and we have been
set free from the penalty of sin.
Mid-week
service (9-21-11)
As Pastor was out of town, celebrating his 26th wedding
anniversary with his wife Jenny, there was no Bible study.
9-18-11
Sunday School
We began a new study on Nehemiah, discussing how he
first prayed to God, then spoke to man, and was a man of faith,
who led the last return of exiles back to Jerusalem around 450 A.D. to
rebuild it's walls in 52 days.
Worship Service
"Purpose, Power and Passion" Mt 10:1-15.
God has given us the great commission as our purpose, the Holy Spirit and the
Bible to
empower us, and it is our love for God and what God loves that
provides our passion to serve Him.
Evening Service
We watched the last half of the DVD "The Case for a Creator" and had about
15 minutes of discussion afterwards.
Mid-week
service (9-14-11)
After having our first practice with a new 16 yr
old convert, Adam, who played the drums while our pianist Gerry played the
piano,
and I directed the music, I had the privilege of leading a
young man named Jose Medina to the Lord at the end of our Bible Study on
hamartiology.
9-11-11
Sunday School
After some reflections on the focus of most
of America on everything but God in regards to the remembering of 911,
we finished are study of the book of Ezra, who modeled for us the
desired God would have us have for His Word.
Worship Service
"The Solution Giver" Mt 9:27-38.
Like the entire world itself, we may have a lot of problems, but Jesus is the
Solution.
The question is "Will we receive what He offers as the solution to
our problems?"
Evening Service
Having watched "The Case for Christ" the past two weeks, we watched the first half of the DVD "The Case for
a Creator"
also with Lee Strobel, with
live discussion following.
Mid-week
service (9-7-11)
No service this week as people were still out of town.
9-4-11
Sunday School
Continuing the "Bare Bones Bible Bios" study in the
book of Ezra, we saw how that because of Ezra's dedication to the study
of the Word of God, God
used him to lead the Jewish exiles out of Babylon & back to Israel.
Ezra then led a revival
of repentance and return
to the proper observance of worshipping God in the temple.
Worship Service
"The Palestinian State Issue" Using both a
PowerPoint slide show, and notes, Pastor preached from Joel 3:2; Dan 11:39; and
Ac 17:26,
that if the U.N. has a vote that holds up to establish land
in Israel as a Palestinian State, this may well be the fulfillment of these
verses,
showing that the Antichrist is already beginning to work,
though not recognized yet.
Evening Service
We
watched the second half of the DVD "The Case for Christ"
with Lee Stroble, former
atheist and journalist for the Chicago Tribune.
Mid-week
service (8-31-11)
No service this week as people will be out of town.
8-28-11
Sunday School
We wrapped up our month long study on "Marriage &
Divorce" reviewing how that the highest aspect of the Christian marriage
is to reflect the love
and everlasting loyalty Christ has for the church, no matter how unfaithful the
true church might become.
Worship Service
"Believers Trump Unbelievers" Mt 9:18-26, for
God is on the side of the believer who puts their faith in Him.
Though unbelievers
receive many daily
blessings from our gracious God, they do not, and will not receive His greatest
blessings of all in this life,
and in
the next.
Evening Service
After
concluding last week's sermon "Who's on Your Friend List?" from Lk 23:1-12,
we
watched the first half of the DVD "The Case for Christ"
with Lee Stroble, former
atheist, lawyer, and journalist for the Chicago Tribune.
Mid-week
service (8-24-11)
We continued our study on the fruit of the Holy Spirit,
seeing how God's love & character are manifested through the goodness and faith
He produces in the
Christian.
8-21-11
Sunday School
We continued another week in our study on "Marriage & Divorce" after one
asked the question "If God hates divorce (Mal 2:16) why
was He in favor of it in Ezr 10:3?
Worship Service
"Why Do We Fast?" Mt 9:14-17.
To better focus on God and His purposes is the Biblical reason for fasting.
Evening Service
Continuing our study in Lk, "Who's on Your Friend List?" was the title of
the message for Lk 23:1-12, though we only got through v. 9.
We are learning practical
lessons by studying the mistakes Pilate & Herod made in making friends with each
other, but not with Christ.
Mid-week
service (8-17-11)
Covered half of the lesson on the fruit(s) of the Spirit.
8-14-11
Sunday School
We continued our study on "Marriage & Divorce" after one
asked the question "If God hates divorce (Mal 2:16) why was He in favor of it in Ezr 10:3?
Worship Service
"Repent & Follow Jesus" Mt 9:9-13 the call of Matthew, and the meal
in Matthew's home with many sinners.
What does it mean to really repent and
really be following Jesus?
Evening Service
Lu 22:63-71 Jesus on trial before Annas, Caiaphas, the council,
Pilate, Herod, & Pilate again.
Mid-week
service (8-10-11)
Continued our study on the Holy Spirit, beginning the section
on His fruits in our lives.
8-7-11
Sunday School
We began a study on "Marriage & Divorce" after one
asked the question "If God hates divorce (Mal 2:16) why was He in favor of it in
Ezr 10:3?
The marriages in Ezra were basically being
annulled for they were against the law of Dt 7:2,3.
Worship Service
"Pastor completed the second half of Isa 53 "The Passion of the Christ in
the O.T."
Evening Service
From Lk 22:52-62 we studied the arrest of Jesus, three of the six denials of
Peter, and how that we need to follow our Lord's instructions
to be on guard against various
temptations, by keeping close to Him in prayer.
After the evening service, a number of us played five
games of volleyball, ate cookies, and had a great time.
Mid-week
service (8-3-11)
Covered the fourth point in our study on the Holy Spirit
"Works of the Holy Spirit."
7-31-11
Sunday School
We continued in "The Bare Bones Bible Bios" by Jim
George, looking into the book of Ezra, looking at Ezra 7:10 again as well as
chpt 8.
Worship Service
"The Old Testament Passion of the Christ" was
Pastor's sermon title. We looked at Isa 53:1-5 and how that we should be
moved to a
gratitude that goes as far as
causing us to worship the One that took our penalty for sin upon Himself.
Evening Service
Being the fifth Sunday of the week, there was no Evening Service.
Mid-week
service (7-27-11)
Due to half of the small group of people that usually come
saying they will be out of town this night, we are cancelling this service for
the second week in a row,
and will meet next week.
7-24-11
Sunday School
This week we did a review of how the Old and New
Testaments can be divided up into five groups each.
OT: The Law Ge-DT,
History Josh-Est, Poetical Job - SoS, Major (Larger) Isa-Dan, and
Minor (Smaller) Prophets Hos-Mal.
NT: Gospels Mt-Jn,
History Acts, Pauline Epistles Ro-Heb, General Epistles
Jas-Jd, Prophecy Rev.
We then continued in "The Bare Bones Bible Bios" by Jim
George, with an intro into the book of Ezra, quoting Ezra 7:10.
Worship Service
"Physically Paralyzed, But Not Spiritually" was
Pastor's sermon title. He used a book called "The Life of Christ in
Stereo"
which
combines the texts of all four gospels into one, non-repetitive, but complete
story. He read the story of how four men
carried a
paralytic man, and then lowered him through the roof of the crowded house of
Peter, in which Jesus was teaching.
There was great emphasis that "Jesus is
God." We were challenged to examine own own lives to see if we
suffer
"spiritual
paralysis" from doubt, fear, insecurity, or whatever, in our living for the
Lord.
Evening Service
We finished up part 2 of "Preparatory Prayer Against Temptation" Lk
22:45:51. This lesson taught that we all face upcoming trials,
and tribulations,
and that the Lord warns us to be prepared for them by spending time getting
ready for them in prayer.
Mid-week
service (7-20-11)
Pastor and Jenny had a night out together,
so there was no service.
7-17-11
Sunday School
After going through "The Bare Bones Bible Bios" by
Jim George on the end of his chapter on Job, seeing "Life's Lessons" from Job,
Pastor Merrill went over his favorite
memory verses throughout the book of Job, from which we can glean truth,
comfort, direction,
and a greater
appreciation of God.
Worship Service
"What Do I have to Do With Jesus?" Mt 8:28-34 was
Pastor's text and title. It told the story of Jesus healing the two
demoniacs,
and how
the townspeople were only concerned with the "hog meat" (as Pastor called it)
that was lost, rather than the men that
were
helped by Jesus, and how they two could have been helped if the had only wanted
to be.
Evening Service
We began part 1 of "Preparatory Prayer Against Temptation" Lk 22:39-44.
This lesson taught that we all face upcoming trials,
and tribulations,
and that the Lord warns us to be prepared for them by spending time getting
ready for them in prayer.
Mid-week
service (7-13-11)
We began the Master Outline Number Four study on
"The Holy Spirit," studying the first three of five points:
1. The Deity of the Holy Spirit; 2. The
Emblems of the Holy Spirit; and 3. Sins against the Holy Spirit.
7-10-11
Sunday School
We finished going over Job 2,3 and discussed how
chapter 3 could be seen as similar to what a person in hell would express.
We also heard from the article on "Universalism,
Heaven, and Hell" from the I.F.C.A. "Voice" magazine of July/Aug 2011.
We saw how Rob Bell could have a good start with
an I.F.C.A. church, and then come to a very different view of the doctrine of
hell.
Bell believes that people can be saved after they
die, and that hell will not be eternal.
Worship Service
"The Comfort of Christianity, Not" Mt 8:18-27 was
the sermon title and text, and showed how that being a Christian (having Jesus
as
one's Savior)
is not always comfortable. Though trials come into our lives, Jesus
is the One that can help us ride them out, or even
"calm the sea."
Just like the disciples in the boat upon the storm, we are not to just try to
ride it out on our own, but to call on Jesus.
Evening Service
After most of us had met in the Council Meeting at 5 p.m.,
with
Chris Clearwater not able to attend to lead our music (due to his work
schedule),
Pas. Merrill led us
using his guitar. We had a visitor in attendance, who was given the
opportunity to ask questions of the Pastor right before
we started.
He had been reading Job, so asked, and received answers regarding that Biblical
book. Pastor then preached on "The
All-Sufficiency of
Christ" from Lk 22:35-38.
Mid-week
service (7-6-11)
Finished up our study on Jesus Christ The Son of God ( third of 15
basic studies). We studied the resurrection, ascension, & 2nd coming.
7-3-11
Sunday School
Both the ladies Sunday School class and
the Sunday School Class Pastor teaches went over 1Pe 3:18-20 and the possible
interpretations
of what "Jesus" is said to have
"preached" and who He preached it to in that passage. Pastor also
taught the difference between being
a Hebrew, a Jew, and an
Israelite. The first has to do with race, the second with
religion, and the third with being born in Israel.
Worship Service
"Freedom is Dependent Upon God's Word" was the
title of Pastor's message, from Jn 8:31-36. This being the day before the
4th of July,
Pastor
brought a patriotic message and taught that true freedom is only found in
connection with God and His Word. Pastor quoted
from memory
the first two long sentences and the closing sentence of our Declaration of
Independence, as well as the preamble to
the
constitution of the United States, and even the entirety of Abraham Lincoln's
Gettysburg Address, only occasionally glancing at his
notes.
Emphasis on the significance of the Civil War, and the similarity of Lincoln and
Christ, physical slavery and spiritual slavery,
and earthly
freedom and spiritual freedom were revealed using the text.
After the service we met in the Fellowship
Hall (which was decorated with flags and "Red, White, and Blue") for a delicious
pot luck.
Evening Service
For the first time since Pas. Merrill has been here, we had a Song Fest
rather than the usual Evening "Preaching/teaching" service.
Gerry Simon was there to play the piano while Chris
lead the congregation in some songs he had selected, and then in some songs
the congregation requested.
After this Glenn Van Kempen sang some songs, and Joanie Ashelford joined in on
some of these.
After this Pas. Merrill sang some well known secular
songs, but with Christian lyrics, and ended with the songs "God Bless the USA"
and Elvis' "American Trilogy" w
Pastor's idea of thoughts that could be behind that song as Pastor's
introduction.
Mid-week
service (6-29-11)
Though the most regular group called to say they wouldn't be able
to make it this night, I was ready at the church in case anybody else came,
but no one did.
6-26-11
Sunday School
Taught by Gene MacAndrews while Pastor
was on vacation.
Worship Service
Tim Oates preached on the subject of "Stewardship"
while Pastor was on vacation
Evening Service
Cancelled while Pastor was on vacation.
Mid-week service (6-22-11)
Cancelled while Pastor was on vacation.
6-19-11
Sunday School
Continued our study in Job, reading and discussing
chapter two.
Worship Service
Pastor spoke on "The Honor of Being a Father"
from Eph 6:1-4. Not only those that are male, physical parents can be
fathers,
but those that lead people to receive Christ as Savior and be
born again can be considered spiritual fathers (or mothers, if you will).
Evening Service
No evening service to commemorate "Fathers
Day"
Mid-week service (6-15-11)
Went over "The Humanity of Jesus" and "The Virgin Birth
of Jesus" as well as a little on the next lesson "The Holy Spirit."
6-12-11
Sunday School
After discussing Isa 44:8 where the
word for "Rock" is also translated "God," because that is what it is referred
to,
and Jer 15:16, where Jeremiah
says he is called by Thy name "O Lord God of hosts, we read Job 1:11-22.
The gist of our lesson
was that Job was a man that God could use as an example of one that had put not
things,
not human relationships, not
even his own body, but God as the top priority in his life.
Worship Service
"The Touch of the Master's Hand" was the title of the
message from Mt 8:14-17, where Jesus healed Peter's mother-n-law.
We heard that it is both needed to be touched,
and that God uses the ministry of touch through His followers.
Evening Service
In lieu of an evening service, we had a Vespers Service at
Chevron Park during the CBC annual picnic, celebrating our 61st
anniversary as a church this year.
The church started on May 7, 1950, and has been celebrated in June since before
I can remember.
This was because the weather was thought to
be better in June. It has been "June Gloom" for a number of years
during our picnic,
so I told Joe Brunner (who has been
reserving Chevron Park for us out of his own finances, even though he hasn't
attended CBC
for a number of years now) that we
will have our picnic next year close to May 7. Though there is a
"Grey May," there is probably
just as good a chance as having a
warm sunny day in that month as there is in June.
This year's Vesper Service consisted of quoting a verse from
the Psalms, speaking on it, and then singing a popular chorus that uses its
words.
We actually started with a song from Song
of Solomon, and then did this also with verses from Micah, Zechariah, and
Philippians.
There were another of other verses ready,
but time would not permit.
Mid-week service (6-8-11)
This Wednesday night we were able to go into
depth on the first of six points on "Jesus Christ, the Son of God" that was introduced
the week before.
We looked at "The
Deity of Jesus."
6-5-11
Sunday School
We began a study on the book of Job. We read the first
11 verses, will continue to read through chapter 2, and then will do an
overview
of the entire book, look through chapters
38-42, and then some of the key verses throughout the entire book.
Worship Service
Pastor preached through Mt 8:1-13 with the sermon title "Prime
the Pump of Blessing." The text first spoke of the healing of a
leper, and
then the healing of the Centurion's servant.
We heard how God wants to bless us to begin with, and that if we respond
properly to the
blessings already given, and obey what God tells
us in His Word, He will pour out upon us even more blessings.
Evening Service
Pastor passed out a copy of his notes to each person in the
evening service, after our time of singing. He said this would make
it easier to
follow the message that was different than most
commentators or preachers would give. The text was Lk 22:31-34.
This speaks of how
Peter denied the Lord three times.
Pastor went into great detail, even having on a chalkboard a step by step
diagram of Peter's movements
throughout his denials, that when reading all
four gospels, Peter actually denied the Lord six times. Lk 22:34 says the
rooster would not crow
(at all) before Peter denied the Lord three
times. After Peter denied the Lord three times, the rooster crowed.
Then before the rooster
would crow again, Mk 14:30 says before the
rooster crowed twice Peter would deny the Lord three times. This
tells us that Peter denied
the Lord three times, and then again another
three times. Matthew records the third, forth, and sixth time.
Mark records the third, fifth, and
sixth time. Luke records the third,
fourth, and sixth time, and John records the first, second, and sixth time.
Because each record three denials,
it appears that Peter denied the Lord three
times, when he really denied the Lord six times. Ask for a copy of
Pastor's notes if you like.
Mid-week service (6-1-11)
With a group of six people, we continued our 15 lesson series
on the basics of Christianity. Having already studied "The Bible"
and "God"
we began our next lesson on "Jesus
Christ the Son of God." Beginning with a lengthy question on "What
is Christianity?" we then went
over the six point outline of the
lesson. Next week we will start going into depth on each point
regarding Jesus Christ, including such as
His deity, death, resurrection,
ascension, and more.
5-29-11
Sunday School
After having spent about four or five months covering the "Eight
Good Kings of Judah," we returned to using the "Bare Bones Bible Bios" book
written by Jim George, and began our new study on
the book of Job. In comparison to Job, and especially in comparison
to the glory we will
one day have (Ro 8:18; 2Co 4:16-18), our own
problems in life are relatively nothing.
We also enjoy having a visitor named "Marco" in our class, who recently
moved to Hawthorne.
Worship Service
Pastor preached "The Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand" from Mt
4:13-25. Because the Jewish leaders would reject Christ as the
Messiah-King,
the glorious stage of the kingdom of God would be
delayed until the roughly 2,000 year age of the church had taken place. During
this time
Christians are to be "fishers of men," leading people
to Jesus as Savior, not just as King.
Evening Service
In observance the Memorial Day weekend, we did not have
an evening service.
Mid-week service (5-25-11)
All but one of the people that come to the midweek service had
"other commitments" this week. With the one person that did come, I
used the time
to talk to them about a number of specific
things and people that were on their mind. We then took all of this to God in
prayer.
5-22-11
Sunday School
From 2Kgs 22 & 23, Pastor took us through the reign of good King
Josiah.
Worship Service
The title of Pastor's sermon was "The Train Trestle
Temptation" where he preached from Mt 1:1-12, and showed how that Jesus could
never have sinned, being God, and
that is why He was qualified to be present as our perfect sacrifice as the Lamb
of God.
Evening Service
Preaching through Luke (22:24-30) Pastor showed how Jesus taught
his disciples the difference between what the world calls "greatness"
and that service is involved in
what God calls true greatness.
Mid-week service (5-18-11)
We went over lesson two on "God" of a 15 lesson series.
We studied God's existence, character, grace, personality, and the Trinity,
among other things. We
discussed how God created angels and man to exist to fellowship with God
forever, therefore with that
design, they will not be annihilated,
but will exist forever in the Lake of Fire, if they are not with God in glory.
5-15-11
Sunday School
We completed our study on good king Hezekiah from 2Chr
32 and moved into our study on the last of the eight good kings of Judah, King
Josiah.
Because our usual meeting place in the Fellowship Hall was set
up for a Mother's Day banquet for the Spanish church, we met in the library.
After asking the class of nine people which location
they preferred, they agreed to meet from now on in the library, which is located
in the two
story building, on the first floor, just past the
bathrooms.
Worship Service
Using 2Th 2 & 3, Pastor's sermon showed how that Harold Camping (of
Family Radio, 1280 a.m.) has given out a false message,
that can be heard by millions, that the rapture
is going to take place in six days, on May 21, 2011.

Evening Service
A number of dedicated Christians still come out on Sunday
evenings to be spiritually fed and fellowship, encouraging one another in the
Lord.
We gained more insight in to the meaning of what took place
during the evening that Jesus first instituted "The Lord's Supper" (The
communion
service.) We
are studying through the book of Luke, and are deep in chapter 22.
Luke is of course the story of our Lord, giving more
aspects of our Lord's
humanity than any other gospel. These are times for you to grow in
both your knowledge of God's word, and in your
experiential knowledge of
the Lord Himself. He is always there with us, as we focus on
what He tells us in His written word.
Mid-week Service (5-4-11 and 5-11-11 cancelled due to
foreknowledge those that regularly attend not planning to be there these weeks.)
5-8-11
Sunday School
Prior to continuing our study of the eight good kings of Judah,
and specifically Hezekiah, Pastor went over the verses and strategy for
instantly combating thoughts of complaining or
anger, which are also found in his article on this subject on the "Been Thinking
About...." page.
Worship Service
Pastor's "Mother's Day Sermon" showed how that God gives His
original blueprint for what a mother should be in Pro 31:10-29,
and that it is a reflection of some of His own
characteristics, a reflection all Christians are to manifest.
Evening Service
There is no Evening Service on Mothers Day to allow people to spend
more time with their mothers.
A number of us met for lunch at El Torito's on Sepulveda and
Artesia.
Mid-week Service (5-4-11 and 5-11-11)
As only the Cole's and Susan Brady come on a regular
basis (and they would not be able to come these two weeks), this Bible Study
prayer time was cancelled for these
two weeks.
5-1-11
Sunday School
From 2Ch 32 we saw how those against God try to discourage
the followers of God. Our secular media does a pretty good job of
communicating enough ungodly material to
discourage Christians. God's remedy is His own form of communication, the
Word of God!!
Which do we take in the most is our own choice.
Worship Service
After having our communion service, Pastor preached his
sermon entitle "Fulfilling All Righteousness." After expounding on the
text of
Mt 3:13-17, pastor preached on
how that Christians, having a never-changing position before God of
righteousness, should then aim to
live a practical life of
righteousness that matches up to that position.
Evening Service
We had a few more couples than usual turn out this evening, who
had enjoyed coming to the business meeting two weeks before.
From Luke 22:1-13 we saw how Judas was "possessed" by Satan,
either physically or mentally, and planned to betray Christ.
We also saw the meaningful picture that God gave in the Old
Testament of applying the blood to the doorposts and lintel on the night
of the Passover. Probably
applied with the motion that would form a cross, it reminds us of the blood that
Jesus shed on the cross.
We were reminded that Jesus is the door, and by His blood we
pass through the doorway to eternal life with God.
Mid-week Service (Wed Night Bible Study & Prayer 4-27-11)
Continuing "The Christian Life Master Outline" and lesson
2 on "God," we reviewed what it means that God is unlimited,
as well as some of the reasons to believe in the
very existence of God, based on evidence all around us. Many have
said
that you can not prove the existence of God.
That actually is a ridiculous statement when you see how much evidence of God
exists. If you found many different sized
fresh footprints on a desert island that you had just landed on, wouldn't that
prove that
someone had been there before you.
4-24-11
Sunday School
Being Easter, we took a break from studying the "Eight Good Kings
of Judah" and focused on some of the things that are associated with Easter.
Because of Christ's resurrection, people are offered eternal life,
forgiveness of their sins, through trusting and calling on Him to become their
Savior.
The words "eggs," "bunnies," "reproduction" then lead to a lesson
on the "Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How of spiritual reproduction."
Worship Service
"The Three Peaks of the Easter Weak" was the title of the
sermon. After an opening song of worship, the congregation came
forward to transform an ugly, life sized,
black cross in to a thing of beauty by covering it with their offerings of
flowers.
This was a continual visual reminder of how the
cross of Christ was transformed from an ugly instrument of execution, to a
beautiful representation of
Christ washing away the sins of His followers.
In addition to our congregational music, Gerry Simon on
piano and Glen Van Kempen on guitar backed up Pastor Merrill
as he sang his new lyrics to
Bon Jovi's "Hallelujah." After this Pastor sang "He's Alive"
to a slide presentation depicting
the disciple's Peter's
experience of denying Christ, then clinging to Him in worship, forgiven, after
Christ's resurrection.
Pastor then brought the message that focused on the
"Three Peaks...," Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday.
Afterwards the congregation was invited to meet in the
backyard of the parsonage to watch the children (and then some young
adults enjoy hunting for Easter
eggs.
After this, a number of us went to Sizzler's for great
food and fellowship.
Evening Service
We do not have an evening service on Easter Sunday.
Mid-week Service 4-20-11
As we began our second of 15 lessons (using the "The Christian Life
Master Outline") we discussed how God is both an infinite,
and eternal being. This lead into a
lesson on the Trinity, that was also diagramed for us on the whiteboard.
4-17-11
Sunday School
Dealing with a strained back, Pastor Merrill led the group through
the 30th chapter of 2nd Chronicles.
We have been seeing how that the Jews under Hezekiah (in Judea and
even some from the northern tribes of Israel),
repented of their sins and united together
to celebrate the Passover for the first time in many, many years.
While reading of the renewed worship among the ancient Israelites,
we also considered ways we need to renew our own worship as well.
Worship Service
"Sinners, Repent" was the title of the sermon. Based on the
call that John the baptizer gave in Mt 3:1-12, we saw how that we too
need to make that mental decision to turn
from our sins to God, and to follow that decision up with changes in our
thoughts,
actions, and lifestyle.
Before the sermon, the congregation happily voted, and we received
Elizabeth Schoonover as the latest official member added to our congregation.
Evening Service
After our song service, Pastor preached from Lk 21:29-38 his sermon
titled "Don't Be Snared." Jesus had warned that there were
signs of His 2nd coming to watch for, and that people
were to be on the alert, or they would fall into the snare of the coming
judgment.
Pastor warned us also to be on the lookout for the many
snares that the world, the flesh, & the devil lay out ensnare us into the wrong
kind of living.
After the service we went into a business meeting. One of the most
interesting things about this meeting was hearing the changes that are coming to
our
missions support. Five out of six of our retired
missionaries will be affected, as will three of the other missionaries.
We are looking forward
to taking on new missionaries that the present congregation
will have a part in selecting, missionaries that will be doing first hand
evangelism
and discipleship on a face to face basis. Be
alert for more information to come in this exciting area.
Mid-week Service 4-13-11
After three weeks, we finished up our lesson on "The Bible."
The Bible is our final authority. What about God? God uses the Bible
as the final authority.
"Thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name." Ps 138:2b
4-10-11
Sunday School
In S.S. we have been going through "The Eight Good Kings of
Judah," in response to a question that had been asked in class
a few months back. We are currently on King Hezekiah, who is No. 7.
This week, from 1Ch 29-30, we spoke about what true worship really is, and how that some
can come to church, sing the songs,
hear the sermon, even pray, and yet never really worship.
Worship has to do with truly adoring God in reverence.
Worship Service
Glenn Van Kempen got a few individuals in the congregation
involved in singing along with his special music in key places.
Pastor Merrill finished up the passage in Mt 2 about the wise men
coming to worship the recently born "King of the Jews."
Just as Jesus had a "Round Trip Ticket to Egypt" Christians have a
round trip ticket to Heaven, while the unsaved are still
holding on to a one way ticket to hell.
Interesting to be able to go through this topic in detail, unlike in December
when
usually it is only touched on quickly
during a "Christmas" message.
Evening Service
After the council meeting at 5 p.m. (in which there was
much discussion concerning the shutters that we are thinking about
purchasing for two of the west windows to
block out the sun during the evening service) we continued our study
through
the gospel of Luke. We covered Lk 21:20-28
where Jesus speaks of "Tribulation Trial and Triumph," giving the signs right
before He comes, and during the Great
Tribulation. This service is also a time to choose songs from the hymnal,
that we
then all enjoy singing along with our digital
hymnal.
Mid-week Service (Wed Night Bible Study & Prayer
4-6-11)
We are just beginning "The Christian Life Master Outline."
In 15 lessons it covers the following:
"The Bible," "God," "Jesus," "The Holy Spirit,"
"Sin," "Judgments," "Rewards," "The Church," "Prayer,"
"Faith," "The Abundant life," "Repentance," "The New
Birth," "God's Plan of Salvation," and "How to Witness Effectively."
A 5-7 point outline comes with each subject, and a verse with each point.
Pastor Merrill adds to this as we go.
Like Sunday School, this is a time when people can ask questions, share,
and pray and grow together.
O that more people would come to more than just the worship service.
